Tilson, MD, DrPH, Chair, CERTs Steering Committee, Announces New Steering Committee Members for 2004-2005 The CERTs steering committee members represent the nation's top leaders in the world of therapeutics. The steering committee works to shape and support the CERTs mission to conduct research and provide education in order to advance the optimal use of drugs, medical devices and biological products. Members are representatives of the eight CERTs centers, federal government agencies, and the private sector, providing both public and private perspectives. Member changes affect two seats on the steering committee October 1. Myrl Weinberg, who was an alternate for Linda Golodner last year, will assume the regular seat and serve another term. David Schulke will serve as her new alternate. In a new position, Dr. Steve Solomon will serve as an alternate for Dr. Marcel Salive. Leaving the committee after five years of service is Linda Golodner. Myrl Weinberg, CAE, is the president of the National Health Council, and has a long history of board and committee service, including serving as a current member of the Health Sciences Policy Board and past member of the Clinical Research Roundtable of the Institute of Medicine and the Commission on Life Sciences of the National Academies. She also serves on the Roche Genetics Science and Ethics Advisory Committee and as chair of the American Medical Association's Ethical FORCE initiative. In addition, Ms. Weinberg serves on the board of the American Society of Association Executives, and as vice chair of the Governing Board of the International Alliance of Patients' Organization. Ms. Weinberg was honored to be selected to serve on the Congressionally-mandated Institute of Medicine Committee created to assess how research priorities are established at the National Institutes of Health. She also served on the IOM Committee to address the structure of NIH, and is a member of the NCQA Committee on Performance Measurement. Newly named alternate member to Ms. Weinberg is David Schulke. He has served as executive vice president of the American Health Quality Association since September 1998, where his job is to promote partnerships with the national network of Medicare Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs). He has worked on health quality issues in Washington for over 20 years, including serving for over a decade as a professional staff member for both Republican and Democratic Members of Congress, principally in the U.S. Senate. Mr. Schulke is responsible for many high profile investigations in the health care field, as well as numerous pieces of health care legislation that were enacted into law by Congress. Prior to working for Congress, Mr. Schulke ran a community based organization that organized nursing home residents and their families, and recruited help from nursing assistants, to demand and win improvements in the quality of care provided in California nursing facilities. Also joining the steering committee is Steve Solomon, MD, who will serve as Dr. Salive's alternate for the one year remaining in Dr. Salive's term. He currently serves as CDC's associate director for Healthcare Systems. Prior to joining the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 1981, Dr. Solomon was in private practice for internal medicine and infectious diseases. Since then, he has held several posts at the CDC, developing, conducting, and directing collaborative research and demonstration programs with academic institutions and state and local health departments. He became Chief of the Healthcare Outcomes Branch of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion in 2000 and served as chair of CDC's Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Working Group. He has represented CDC on expert panels for a number of national organizations, including the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the Association of Professionals in Infection Control. From 2001 to 2003, Dr. Solomon served as chair of the Patient Safety Task Force of the Department of Health and Human Services. One of the original steering committee members, Linda Golodner is leaving the steering committee after five years of service. Ms. Golodner, president and CEO of the National Consumers League, is the recipient of numerous awards in recognition of her outstanding contributions promoting consumer interests both nationally and internationally. Among her considerable accomplishments, she chairs the National Council on Patient Information and Education and is a founding member of the Child Labor Coalition. In addition, she serves on the board of directors of the National Patient Safety Foundation, the Union Community Fund, the International Cocoa Initiative, the Patient Safety Institute, and the American National Standards Institute, where she chairs the Consumer Interest Forum. Ms. Golodner received the American Pharmaceutical Association's Hugo H. Schaefer Award. The United Nations Association (NCA) also honored her for her work in human rights. The American Council on Consumer Interests presented Ms. Golodner with the “Friend of Consumers Award” in recognition of outstanding contributions to policies that promote consumers' interests nationally and internationally.
